In the Middle Ages, it wasn't taken for granted that all pilgrims who set out for Santiago de Compostela would always make it alive. Monte do Gozo, the 'Hill of Joy' is the hill on the outskirts of Santiago where pilgrims of old times could catch a glimpse of the towers of the cathedral for the first time.
