O Cebreiro is the first settlement after leaving Castille and León and entering Galicia. The pallozas – round stone houses with thatched roofs you will come across here – date back to Celtic times.

Elías Valiña Sampedro was the parish priest of O Cebreiro in the 1980s and started the great revival of the Camino de Santiago. Among other things, we have the yellow arrows on the Camino thanks to him. He is buried in the Santuario de Santa María a Real.

According to legend, around 1300 a villager, who had braved a snowstorm to get to mass, and was the only one to do so, was scolded by the priest for doing so for a piece of bread and a sip of wine. At that moment, the bread turned into flesh and the wine into blood. The chalice and paten in which the miracle took place are kept in a silver reliquary, donated by the Catholic Monarchs who visited the site in 1486.
