Rates developed in the Middle Ages around the Monastery of Rates, founded in 1100, although the place had been inhabited since Roman times. It was traditionally one of the starting points of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, and is home to the first albergue to open in Portugal on the way to Santiago. The albergue has a really nice stamp, so make sure to collect one in your credencial even if you don't spend the night there.
