San Juan de Ortega was a disciple of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Like his master, he dedicated his life to helping pilgrims, and he founded the monastery here, around which this tiny village came to exist.

Monasterio de San Juan de Ortega

The monastery was built between the 12th and 13th centuries in the late Romanesque style, further expanded with Gothic elements in the 14th century. In the transept of the church, there is a 15th century sepulchre with scenes from the life of San Juan de Ortega. The actual remains of the saint are in an unmarked stone sarcophagus in front of the altar in the chapel.
