The town bears the name of the famous son of Viloria de Rioja, who now rests in the cathedral.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada wanted to be a monk, but after he was turned away because of his lack of education, he dedicated his life to serving the pilgrims walking to Santiago de Compostela by building roads, bridges and pilgrim hospitals. Today, he is the patron saint of engineers in Spain.

Catedral de Santo Domingo de la Calzada

To commemorate the legend of Saint Dominic saving the life of a wrongly convicted pilgrim (see also Barcelos in Portugal), to this day a rooster and hen are on display inside the church. (The coop where they come from, taking turns, is maintained by the Cofradía de Santo Domingo next door.) The mosaic-tiled crypt houses the tomb of the saint.
