Barcelos is the home of the ubiquitous galo de Barcelos, a national mascot of Portugal, and the protagonist of a legend strikingly similar to that of Santo Domingo de la Calzada on the Camino Francés. The weekly markets, held every Thursday, are one of the oldest and biggest in Portugal.
What to see in Barcelos
Paço dos Condes de Barcelos
The ruins that catch the eye first when crossing the bridge to Barcelos used to be the palace of the Dukes of Bragança, until it was destroyed by the great 1755 earthquake (the same one that devastated Lisbon). The site is now an open-air museum.
Templo do Bom Jesus da Cruz
The name of the octagonal church of the Good Jesus of the Cross harks back to a miracle of a cross appearing on the ground at the nearby Campo da Feira, where the markets are still held to this day.
